Day 6 – And then it was over …until next time!
I must apologise to my ‘dedicated’ followers (who knew I had any!? – certainly, not me!)…
After the excitement of the “Day of the Ned”, I thought the last day of our Lanzarote would be way too dull to put out there (and that may still prove to be the case!)
But I’ve had requests, so here you go!
…only 8 months late and just before our next big holiday adventure (already booked!) …more of that another time.
The day after the night before
All things considered, we slept very well that night. Perhaps it was the shock of the night’s events, or we were just grateful to still be alive and happily snuggled up in our beds!
When we did finally surface, the day was overcast but there was a silver lining. It meant we had our pick of the sunbeds and were able to grab the prime location between the two pools. Finally! …a win in the battle of the sunbeds (mind you, we were the only people poolside that morning, so not much competition).
Leaving our stuff, we headed for a leisurely breakfast. On the way I checked to see if our friendly hand-holding rep was scheduled to come past today, you know, so I could thank them for their fantastic support during our ‘very special’ coach journey the day before. Alas, no rep.
To celebrate our being here in one piece after the previous night’s shenanigans and to commiserate this being our last day, Bucks Fizz was definitely on the menu at breakfast today (the drink, not the band).
Inevitably for me – because I have a degree in clumsiness – the fizz spilt over the glasses making a mess
…classy!
We spent most of the morning huddled under one of the sun umbrellas, sheltering from the odd shower. It wasn’t cold but it wasn’t sunbathing weather either. Not wanting to give up our prime location we’d longed for all week, we stuck it out long enough for a late lunch, but even we gave up eventually.
Preparing to leave
Taking a post-lunch drink back to our room, we headed off to start packing for our departure the following morning.
Fi, who had a massive suitcase anyway, had bought a few things since being here and was in danger of breaching her weight limit (for her suitcase …I hasten to add!).
(Not sure how she could have so much stuff with her, after all we were only there a week)
With cases packed, we chilled until it was time for dinner. The bad weather brought out the crowds and it was a little busy, so naturally we headed to the lobby bar for a pre-dinner drink.
…and as I returned from the bar there was nearly another clumsy mishap as I tripped over my own feet.
What a relief …despite stumbling again when attempting to regain my balance and composure, not a drop of Gin was spilt!
Off to the airport and home
Let’s face it, on this holiday our track record for getting out-and-about was far from great. So that morning we checked, checked again and triple-checked all travel documents before leaving.
…and thanks to a private transfer, there was no possibility of a Ned invasion on the way to the airport!
Safely through passport control (phew!), we were ready to head home, although not so ready to face the cold weather that awaited us.
Endings and new beginnings…
Our week’s holiday had been amazing…
- The near disaster with the passport, saved by a wonderful security guard in Glasgow
- The discovery of the ultimate two-centre holiday… A rainy night in Glasgow followed by the sunshine of Lanzarote!
- Meeting interesting people from the ‘Sunbed Mafia‘ to the lovely ‘Red Winers‘
- Those fabulous supersized G&Ts, not to mention the tanker of Baileys shipped in each morning (some might say that was just for me and Fi!)
- The overheard stories, will I ever forget the strange case of Dunelm vs John Lewis!?
- …and we ‘ended’ with (almost literally) our very own apocalypse in the Day of Ned!
Along with a bag full of amazing memories, we both had a lovely tan to see us through winter (well, in my case I was one shade lighter than my usual brilliant white!)
Fi and I will continue our travels in 2024 …have I said we have already booked!?
Special Note to Fi: I hope you have that passport safely locked away until then. I’m not sure fluttering your eyelids will work a second time!
