Day 3 – Sun, sun, and more sun!
We woke up to another glorious day that was even hotter than the day before, and this meant only one thing …yet more exhausting lazing in the sun (I know, I know! Such a dreadful soul-destroying job …but someone had to do it!)
There were no sunbed niceties this morning and no mistakes with bagging a good spot …well almost!
I was up early and quickly out of the starting blocks to bag that all-important pair of sunbeds in a spot I thought was perfect …but not being an expert in these things I’d misjudged a badly placed gazebo that would cast shade later!
(Look… I hadn’t been abroad in the sun for 5 years!)
Luckily, Fi quickly arrived to rescue me, correcting my mistake, and bagging us an even better spot!
(As I said before, you needed an engineering degree in the proficiency of sunbed placement!)
Once we had reserved our place in the traditional way (by stretching our towels out and adding bottles of suncream for added authenticity!) we headed off for breakfast.
Food glorious food
Just a light breakfast that day; there was so much food available all the time we could have simply stuffed our faces all day…
Quite literally, you could roll from breakfast to morning snacks, right into lunch …then onto afternoon coffee/tea and cake …before pre-dinner drinks and nibbles …finished off with dinner and drinks!
…and some people did exactly that!
This day, we had a light breakfast of scrambled egg, smoked salmon, toast, and a glass of fizz (well, what else does one have with breakfast!)
The Cava Bar was a staple in the restaurant at breakfast and one that we occasionally indulged in! (Honestly, it was just ‘occasionally’ …even we couldn’t face fizz every morning!)
Sun, snoozing and a good book
What can I say… We spent a large part of the day snoozing in the sun and reading books! By this time both Fi and I had finished a couple of books each. After all, that’s what we were there to do so it would have been rude not to!
(Thank heavens for the invention of the Kindle! Imagine if you still had to carry books with you on holiday, especially at the rate we were reading them!)
At lunchtime …late lunch …we dragged ourselves away from our sunbeds and headed to the pool bar for a shandy and a bite to eat.
People watching
We spent many contented minutes people-watching. It wasn’t difficult in a place like this, there was so much entertainment just hanging around!
Most people were quite content to just chill in the sunshine and let the world go by, a bit like us really, and when the opportunity came about they indulged in a little fun…
…like singing along to the poolside entertainment or joking with the lovely waiters (some were very lovely!)
But, oh my word, others sat around looking like they’d been ‘slapped in the face by a wet kipper’ (to quote Fi!), complaining about something or other.
(I hope that’s not us in another 10 years or so …although I suspect it might be!)
The Red Winers!
As you might recall, they were an older couple we met on the first night – late 60s – early 70s, from the North of England …who believed in the power of red wine as a cure-all!
We sometimes saw them at breakfast, but mostly they surfaced just before lunchtime for their first fix of the day …their Red Wine fix!
We must admit to being mesmerised by how much red wine they could drink in a day and still remain standing up!
It’s true they didn’t neck it straight from the bottle or gulp it down in a quick 5-minute flurry… No, they took their time over every large glass …but even so, once they’d had their 11 am coffee (of course, standards must be maintained!) off they went…
…a large glass every hour or so
…until about 6 pm when they left the pool bar area (presumably to get ready for dinner), and then they started again at dinner for the evening session!
They were a marvel, perhaps the key to their abilities was that they never quite sobered up. They were never what you’d call drunk, but they were always preeeetty chilled! 😊
A chilly evening
Speaking of chilled, the evening got very chilly indeed!
There was an extraordinarily strong breeze that constantly blew across the hotel and as that particular afternoon wore on it got colder in our little haven.
So, after grabbing a couple of drinks we headed back to our private terrace, the perfect sun trap, sheltered from the wind, and whiled away the hours watching the sun go down.
It was a struggle to get moving in the evening, but when we finally made it to the restaurant for dinner it was mobbed. Very lively with the usual scrum going on around the food area. We took our time, having a drink first and managed to escape most of the chaos practically unscathed.
We managed a leisurely dinner, even beating the Cheese Locusts to the stilton once again!
Not for the first time we didn’t fancy the entertainment, a rather lacklustre guitarist, playing in the pool bar. We opted for the comfort of the Moroccan tent (and it had the added advantage of being cosy and warm in there …oh no was the impact of the olds rubbing off on us!)
We finished off our evening, and another lovely day with a few Baileys …well it did seem the drink of choice around here and what is it they say ‘when in Rome’?!
In hindsight, we may have had a few too many Baileys resulting in slightly merry video calls home with our hubbies (a fact I don’t fully recall …I had to be told by Mikey! …what was in that stuff!?)
The next day we opted to avoid the ‘Sunbed Wars” and head to the beach …to recover!
